Prevention Minimize

The best way to protect yourself from AIDS is to wear a condom.

One way to adapt to the risk of AIDS during sexual relations is to adopt the so-called ‘safer sex’ rules, which mean sex with a lower risk.

There is no such thing as ‘zero risk’. However, these risks can be greatly reduced by adopting certain kinds of behaviour – hence the expression safer sex, rather than safe sex.

The most common safer sex practices are:

- using a condom with a water-based lubricant during anal or vaginal penetration
- using a condom during fellation (mouth-penis contact)
- sex without penetration

Condoms

For anal penetration, some people prefer ‘strengthened’ condoms. But surveys* have shown that there are just as many breakages with strengthened condoms as with traditional ones. Accidents are more likely to be linked to the way in which condoms are used, especially when plenty of water-based lubricant is used.

Ex Aequo stopped distributing strengthened condoms a few years ago. These condoms are also more costly, it should be noted. This new policy has helped to keep down the cost of prevention supplies for both individuals and gay establishments.

PLEASE NOTE! Always check the expiry date printed on condom wrappers.

It is also important to ensure that condoms are not exposed to heat or sunshine.

Condoms come in different sizes and models. See our prevention store.

It is highly inadvisable to wear two condoms, one on top of the other.
